INSIDE THE MUSIC BIZ
WITH CORNBREAD

October 23, 2005:  We are proud to present an online training module in Music Business. Continuing on the theme of getting paid as a songwriter, Cornbread goes into how to collect performance royalties and provisions in publishing contracts that could prevent you from receiving royalties.   - editor

Intro to Music Biz
Getting Paid As A Writer
ALL IMB LESSONS BY FRANK IMANI JAMAL

This Week's Contents
Each week the current week's contents of the lessons will be linked in the order of study.  Lessons from previous weeks, which are still available, are also linked (but shown with a gray background). If you start your study with the first link (like you should) there will be links to the next step at the end of the linked page/item.
For each lesson, you will be given one or more "performance objectives" for the lesson.  These are the things that you are to understand after you study the lesson.  These are the things you will be tested on.  There are 80 performance objectives in the entire course.   Here are the performance objectives for this week's lessons:

2-9) Define "cross-collateralization."

2-12) List the 3 major performance rights organizations.

2-16) List the criteria publishers use in accepting new material.

2-17) Explain the two functions of a publishing contract.

Study Guide

For maximum effectiveness, you need to study the lessons three times.  It has been proven that the average person can forget a majority of what is read after about 3 days, if it isn't reinforced.  To counteract this, read it on day 1, re-read it on day 3 and then read it again just before you study the next lesson.

Online Questions

As always, you can ask a question, or discuss a lesson at the "Ask RID Forum" at Recording Website.

General Information About This Service

We will be posting at a rate which allows you to finish the module in a little over 6 months.  There are a lot of lessons! For each lesson, there will be one or two test questions that will help you make sure you get the most key points of the lesson.  After you finish each "section" of the course, there will a multiple question quiz for you to take.  There are 4 study sections to the course, which means that you will have a section quiz every 6-7 weeks.
Like all REQ Tip Series, these lessons are free and available for 4 weeks.  After that time they are restricted to paid subscribers.  Save the lessons to your hard drive for future reference.  This is allowed for your own personal reference - distributing this to others is not allowed, (and illegal) even if it is for no charge.
