| 9/18/2005 - Berry Gordy Jr. made millions of dollars in the music field in the 1960's with his "Motown Sound." What was behind his phenomenal success? Does it have any application to today's music? Bob explains the formula he used. - editor |
When we look at the successes in music in the last half-century, a couple of individual names come to mind almost immediately: Lennon, McCartney and Gordy. Of course John Lennon and Paul McCartney were the driving force behind the Beatles explosion. Berry Gordy Jr., was the driving force behind the "Motown Sound."
I can't speak about how the Beatles achieved super-status, but I can about how Berry Gordy took neighborhood kids, like Diana Ross, Mary Wells and Smokey Robinson and made them into superstars. I can speak with authority about this because I was there, as a wet-behind-the-ears 17 year old recording technician when it started happening. |
