What's the most popular show on TV right now?  What TV show has headlines every week when you check the news?  What TV show is talked about on talk shows?  The answer is the latest and most elaborate version of a "Star Search" type talent show called American Idol.  Blending a little reality-show "boot-off" formula into a basic talent show format, Idol dangles the talent carrot for the public to grab onto in large numbers.

If you put a new singer in front of millions of TV viewers for months on end and then release a CD as well as arrange for a national tour, you're likely to be successful.  Is it little wonder that the people who own the TV show also own the music label that puts out the idol-winner's music and books them on tours. Is it the talent that is making the success or the constant publicity generated by another formulistic TV Production Company?
