What happened to the rehearsal?

I am constantly amazed when listening to some artists coming in to the studio to record.

Many artists when first forming come in to the studio, pay $40, $50, $80 and hour. Seasoned musicians come in and record a newly written song. And the quality of these performances is such that often times the cut couldn't (or shouldn't) even be used as a demo.
