The
music industry and the film industry have something in common - they are
both part of the entertainment industry. These two "branches" of the
entertainment industry have a long-standing synergetic relationship.
Films use music to help establish "mood" and "feeling" as well as both
establishing and promoting themes. Music uses films to provide
exposure to a much wider audience and provide additional revenue streams.
In The
Black Productions (ITB) is a company with less than one year's history but
is headed by seasoned professionals with decades of experience in the film
and music branches of the entertainment industry. Its mission is to
develop and coordinate the production of successful urban-themed feature
films from Michigan independent and developing filmmakers.
Unknown
to the average person, the Motorcity produces more professional film and
video footage than any metropolitan area in the USA, including Hollywood.
The reason that this is so unknown is that the footage produced is primarily
industrial and commercial. The reason there is so much work of this
nature is because the Motorcity is home base to some of the largest
industrial US corporations - the auto companies. There is very little
production of the more popular (and much more visible) feature film.
Detroit, with an 85% black population makes the Motorcity an extremely
logical home base for ITB's operations. Because of these factors, ITB
established its offices in the David Scott Building in downtown Detroit.
In order
to accomplish it's mission ITB needs to not only tap into the talents of the
experienced independent creative producers but also the developing
talent in the area. To accomplish this, ITB has sought out an
associate relationship with entertainment professionals familiar with
developing music and film technicians and producers.
In the
Black Productions & The Recording Institute of Detroit (RID) are proud to
co-announce a strategic partnership. In this relationship RID will act
as a clearinghouse for music, music productions and technical services from
developing sources that may be talented and qualified but lack professional
credentials in the field. The advantages of such a strategic
partnership relationship became obvious in a series of meetings between Bob
Dennis, CEO of RID and Harold Bowles, Executive Director of ITB. Both
executives have had a long history of working with the Motorcity
entertainment industry, beginning their careers with Motown Records in the
60's. The partnership was begun with a handshake while shooting the
RID segment of Entertainment & More, Friday evening (12/9/04).
The two executives clarified the relationship.
H.
Bowles: Since
ITB is basically working to establish a urban-oriented film industry in the
Motorcity, it is important that we tap in to all of the available creative
and technical resources in the metropolitan area and the surrounding
Michigan region. Because of a history of film and music production in
the area there is a lot of experienced and talented professionals to use in
our film productions. However, to properly tap into the developing
resources that may actually have just as much talent & creativity, can be a
time-prohibitive endeavor.
The
Recording Institute of Detroit and Bob Dennis, it's CEO, is in the business
of developing and screening these kinds of talented individuals that could
be utilized in the production of our film projects. We feel that entering
into this strategic partnership with RID only increases our reach into the
community and has no apparent downside. We are looking forward to a
long standing relationship with RID.
R.
Dennis: RID's function in the
industry is to train individuals in both the technical and creative aspects
of music and audio production. We then try to help them get into the
first paid positions in the field. As a result of this we are
naturally in contact with many of the new faces that will be tomorrows
engineers, artists and producers.
The
ITB partnerships gives RID another place that graduates and newcomers can be
placed by RID and another powerful source of post-school, on-the-job
training for those starting out in the field.. Traditional places such as
large recording studios are needing less new talent as production shifts
from large commercial studios to project studios in the basements and
garages.
