Musartness?
Musartness is
a term that I use regarding the correct way to do music
business. My brother's company is Called Musart.
He (aka Muruga Booker) is both a painter and a musician.
When we (Musart) began producing new age releases 20 years
ago, he put one of his best paintings on the cover, he would
do extensively art-filled promo packs and any flyer he made.
He was (and is) an art fanatic! He completely believes
that the visual impart of the product is as important as the
music.
Who's to say
he's wrong? Not me, for certain! His little
no-investment mom and pop record company proceeded to sell
over 20,000 units (mostly cassettes) in its first decade of
existence. His work at his "record company" won him
awards and participation in a top ten new age release,
Blues From The Rainforest with Merl Saunders and Jerry
Garcia. Two of Muruga's tunes (Fireflys and Afro Perle
Blues) were used on the release with Muruga co-producing and
providing the drum work for the band. This release
(along with live-recording follow-up) sold over 500,000 units.
Who can dispute that the inclusion of art wasn't a huge factor
in this success.
One other
factor I feel is essential to success ....
