MASTERING WITH SOUND FORGE™ - Pt 3
MULTIBAND MASTERING COMPRESSION
By Bob Dennis

Multi-Band Compression

One of the available compressors in Sound Forge 7 is a multi-band compressor, with 2 bands.  Each "band" restricts the compression to a particular frequency range that can be set by the user.  The most-often used configuration is where the mastering engineer will use one band to compress the bass frequencies and the second will compress the midrange and treble frequencies.  With the proper setup of the compression bands, virtually all breathing by the compressor can be eliminated.  Breathing is when you will hear the level change on high frequency instruments (or noise) caused by level changes of lower-frequency instruments.  You will begin to hear noise changes (especially on analog recordings) and erratic levels on high-frequency instruments when too much compression is applied.
