8/20/2004:  An important part of production is getting good mixing and mastering of the product that that is going to be released.  Even with excellent mixing a tune can can sound unimpressively "weak," due to a problem I call "creeping Level."  This sound-killer is handled in mastering.

First Impressions

First impressions are critical. This is why you dress neatly for a job interview.  This is why you don't pick your nose as you are introducing yourself to a member of the opposite sex.

First impressions are just as critical to your productions.  A music director at a radio station will decide if your tune is "in the running" for air play within the first 20 seconds.  If the tune isn't impressive within that 20 seconds, the rest of the tune isn't even listened to!  Its not unusual for otherwise good mixes to have a problem that makes them very weak-sounding at the top of the mix.  The problem is called ....
