ACOUSTICS & LISTENING
Part 1 - Monitoring Basics
By Bob Dennis

In order to mix you have to hear the blend of instruments through speakers.  In a Recording Website Tip series I started this week (Hearing The Mix), I cover how to set up monitor speakers for effective listening.  But what you hear is not just the output of the speaker system but a bend of the speaker sound and the room sound.  A poor-sounding room can make speakers sound bad all too often.  The project studio in particular often winds up being installed in a room that doesn't sound all that great.  This tip series covers how this effects your ability to hear the music and, therefore, your ability to mix music.  How do you determine if the poor room-sound is affecting listening too much?  And if it has a negative effect, what do you do?
