Why Do We Want A Publisher?
When a songwriter
writes a sing he (or she) owns 100% of it, even if the
copyright is not properly registered. The copyright is
the writer's asset when it is created and "fixed" (documented
by sheet music or recording). The songwriter registers
the copyright for one main reason - to protect it from being
stolen and someone else claiming that they wrote it. So the
copyright fee of $30 or so seems well justified.
Traditionally when a publisher becomes involved, 50% of the
writers money goes to the publisher. Why on earth would
someone give half of their money to a publisher? There
are reasons, and if you asked a publisher you would get one or
both of these stock answers .... |
