2/27/2004:
Each week the Developing Artist Productions staff will be
posting a tip on music production and marketing designed for
the unsigned artists. "To sell records, get it on the radio"
is a statement that was true long ago and hasn't worked in
music marketing for over a decade. But now, with the advent
of the Internet, this statement may well become true again -
for the new streaming radio of today. |

Radio Then |
In the 1960's when I (Tom
Gelardi) was promoting the Beatles for Capitol plus Motorcity Rock, R&B and Pop
acts, radio was the King. On quite a few
occasions I would hear the record I just delivered played over air as I was
pulling out of the station's parking lot. They would be playing the tune
as part of a "Make It Or Break It" type of a contest, and if my record won, we
could be assured of some regular airplay by the station.
|
|
Regular airplay would lead to
"top 40 rotation" play, and if the record got this type of
play you were assured sales in the stores. By getting the record to this
status on a few key radio stations, you got yourself a local hit record.
