What Is Recording Engineer's Quarterly?

Recording Engineer's Quarterly is an online magazine about recording and the recording industry.  The articles are primarily "educational" in nature featuring techniques in recording, music production, industry trends and promotion/marketing techniques for music. It's geared for the musician and home recordist but has articles in depth enough to be interesting to professional in the field.  The magazine is co-published by Recording Institute of Detroit (an audio recording/production vocational school in its 25th year of operation) and Alexander Magazine.

How Did REQ Start?

Between 1986 and through the end of 1997 the Recording Institute Of Detroit published a printed magazine called "Engineer's Quarterly."  It was distributed to about 35 music stores in Southeastern and Mid Michigan each month, as well as being mailed out to about 1000 former students.  The magazine was 24 pages and was a tremendous task to put out each issue.  We began selling advertising space to help offset the costs of making and distributing this "free" publication.  After many years of publication, its creation was getting in the way of the main function of RID, which was to teach recording, music and production to its students. The publication frequency dropped to bi-monthly and then quarterly.  In the beginning of 1998, we decided that we could reach more people, with less expense, by utilizing the World Wide Web.  The first issue was put on line in April, 1998.

Why Are Some Articles For Registered Subscribers Only?

There are different aspects to this answer.  Probably the most important reason for us is that we are serious about recording and the recording field.  We want serious readers.  We also want statistical information about where the readers are on the globe.  We want to be able to communicate to readers to find out what they want or don't want in the magazine (although we don't "bug" readers with a lot of e-mail).  When we do accept sponsorships, the numbers and statistical data are very useful.  There is also a security reason regarding copyright protection.
