MENTORING MEMO 001 -
December 2, 2002
DEVELOPING ARTIST PRODUCT PRICING INTRODUCTION One of our mentored students was planning a release of a 6 song EP debuting the band. We asked him, what will be your suggested retail price of the EP? After hearing the answer we felt some mentoring was warranted. Here's our advice: Too high of a price is almost guaranteed to kill your record sales. The amount you sell it for could be as low as 50% of the "suggested retail price." In addition, you would expect to provide "free product" at a ratio of 7:1 to a distributor or store so that they can work "Special Sales" at deep discount prices. Pricing too high or too low is a good way to make the effort that goes into a record become wasted - we strongly suggest using the developing artist pricing technique.
