Rock Recording Primer Article 1: "Recording And Mixing The Rhythm Electric Guitar" by Bob Dennis.  If it is a three or four piece rock band that you are recording, the electric rhythm guitars need to be big and wide.    In addition to reviewing techniques that we have presented in previous tips and articles, we give signal processing and mixing advice for these important tracks.

Rock Recording Primer Article 2: "Recording And Mixing The Lead Electric Guitar" by Bob Dennis.  A good rock lead guitar should sound "right there" and  "Huge". There should also be a clarity of the notes being played. These factors create a conflict in the microphone setup to pick up the instrument that we show you how to quickly solve.

Rock Recording Primer Article 3: "Recording And Mixing The Rock Bass Guitar" by Bob Dennis. My experience is that blending together both a direct pickup and a mic placed on a bass guitar amplifier gives the best combination of fullness and clarity.

developing artist productions Article:  "The Record Company Executives - Part 2" by Ron Dunbar.   Ron goes over the roles of the Publicity, Promotion and Marketing Directors in large record companies and the time schedules they keep when a company really gets behind anew release.

Rock Recording Primer Article 4: "Doubled Electric Guitar Recording & Mixing by Bob Dennis.  The double-tracking of rhythm and lead guitar parts gives a fuller, more interesting sound and image in the final mix.   This is a real effective way of getting the superstar sound on the CD for a three or four piece rock group.

"Basic Mixing Reverb Libraries"   by Bob Dennis.  I can't usually call a mix a real mix if there is only one kind of reverb available for the mixdown session. The first two reverberation effects I dial up for mixing are a "Large Hall" program and a "Chamber" program. I of course want more reverb programs for my mix, but I can "make do" with these two programs running.

Rock Recording Primer Review Article: "Recording & Mixing Drums"  by Bob Dennis.  The basic hard or power rock formula is a track of guitars, bass and drums.  In this issue we presented articles on recording & mixing the rock guitar and bass.  In  March 2001 Recording Engineer's Quarterly  Bob explained recording and mixing of rock drums. Putting these articles together gives you  sort of a complete primer on recording rock tracks.
