Rules for Playing Acrophobia
How To Play Acrophobia

Game Synopsis:
The object of the game is to create funny, witty or creative answers to random acronyms. You score points based on how many people vote for you and how quickly you entered your answer. The object of the game is to be in first or second place when someone scores 30 points, to advance to the Face Off round. Then, win the round by out-scoring your one remaining opponent in three rapid-fire rounds.

To Start:
A game begins when there are at least 3 people in a game room. There cannot be more than 14 players in a room at any time. You can choose a game room, or have the game find one for you. An addition setting is available to allow adult language in the room.

Composition Round:
Players are given an acronym of increasing length (the first round is three letters, the next is four, then 5, then back to 3, etc.). Players have 60 seconds to create an answer that is funny, witty, topical or unique – something which will get the other players in the game to vote for them.

A legal answer is a sentence or phrase in which the first letter of each word matches the corresponding letter of the Acro. For instance: FUFG could be “Football Up For Grabs” or “Felix Unger: finicky guy”. If you enter an answer that doesn’t fit, or has profane language when in a language-restricted game, the game will prompt you to fix it.

If enough time remains in the round, you may enter a replacement answer. This answer does not replace your old answer until it passes the language filter (if it’s on), nor if it isn’t a legal answer.

Voting Round:
After the time is up, the voting round takes place. All of the answers appear on-screen in a random order, without the author’s name attached. Players have a period of time to vote for one answer, not including their own answer.

Scoring:

  • Vote Points. One point per vote.
  • Speed Bonus. The fastest legal entry scores 2 points. These points are not awarded if the player didn’t vote for others, or started the round with 27 or more.
  • Acro Bonus. The round winner (who get the most votes) scores one point per letter in the Acro. Ties are broken by speed.
  • Winner bonus. One point if voted for the round winner.

Players that do not vote score no points for the round. If the person who won the round did not vote, the next round’s category is “General Acrophobia.”

If at the end of any voting round, a player has scored 30 or more points, the game moves to the Face Off round (see below.) Otherwise, the winner of the round chooses the next round’s category, and the game continues.

Categories:
The category in the first round is “General Acrophobia.” In all other rounds, the person who won the round (scored the Acro Bonus) gets to choose the next round’s category. There will be 4 choices available: 2 “standard” categories chosen from a list of 10, 1 “wild” category chosen from a list of hundreds, and “General Acrophobia.” If a category is not chosen in 10 seconds, the category will be “General Acrophobia.”

Face Off:
The top two scorers advance to the Face Off round when one of the players scores 30 or more points. If there is a tie for second, ties are broken by the speed of the entry of the last round.

In the Face Off round, the two finalists are given three Acros, one at a time. They are given only 15 seconds to come up with an answer. While they work on the acro, the players are voting on the one they just finished.

There are no Speed or Acro Bonuses for the Face Off round. The category for all three Acros is “General Acrophobia.” If one person does not enter a legal answer, the other person scores the maximum amount possible for the Acro (as if everyone had voted for him.) If neither person enters a legal answer, no points are awarded for that Acro.

The person with the most votes after all three Acros wins. Ties are not broken, and there are officially two winners. If neither player scores at least 3 points, neither player wins.

Complaints system – majority kick

Each game room will keep track of complaints against each player in that room. If the majority of players currently in the room have issued complaints against a player, the server will send a leave game message to that player, with the following message: “The majority of players in this room have found you in violation of our Common Sense Rules. If we receive additional complaints about your behavior in the future, you may be banned from Acrophobia. Your session in this room is now being terminated.” The server will then log a complaint against the player, specifying the game room name and the names of all the players who complained.

The sever will keep track of people kicked out of the room, and if they try to join again before one half hour have passed, the server will send a leave game message to the player’s client with the following message: “The room that you have selected is unavailable to you at this time. Please select another.”

Several special rules will be in effect to help prevent abuse of this feature. If a player receives enough complaints to warrant being kicked, but is either one of the top two scoring players, or is any of the players in an tie for first, or has a score greater than twenty, they will not be kicked out until after the end of the current game. Every time a new complaint comes in, players will be re-assessed for kicking, so players who drop out of the top two before they get to a score of twenty can be kicked.

Players in room Number of complaints to kick
1 – 2 No kick allowed
3 – 4 2
5 – 6 3
7 – 8 4
9 – 10 5
11 – 12 6
