Consider The Source
The medium that is used
to store the mix file has a reference level. If your mix was
recorded to analog tape, average meter indication should not exceed
"0" as read on a VU meter. The peak level of the analog tape
will be 10 dB higher than this reference level. If your mix
was recorded to a digital medium (e.g., hard disk) the peak 0dB FS
reference level is 18 dB higher than the average level. We'll
refer to this as the headroom of the media - 18 dB for digital and
10 dB for analog tape.
Why?
The reason for the
discrepancy of headroom for digital vs. analog is that the analog
tape master has a thing called "tape compression." This tape
compression makes the analog master sound more than twice as loud
then a digital master. Is it a wonder that many purists still
like the analog tape sound over digital?
