One of the most critical aspects of a mix is to get the bass instruments working together where the "notes" played can be heard.  Because of spectrum characteristics of the two common bass instruments (the bass drum and the bass guitar), it is difficult to properly hear both in a mix.  If the mixing engineer fails to get a good blend, it becomes a task the mastering engineer must try to achieve with EQ techniques.
