BOB DENNIS ON DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING

021 -  Levels In Mastering
The traditional leveling device for mixing & mastering is the VU meter which gives an accurate indication of volume changes that can be heard by the ear. Bob gives an in-depth rundown on how to use this valuable tool.

Many mixes will sound good if you play them back at any level you want. But the mixes wind up in a medium that has level restrictions. The maximum peak level on a compact disk is "digital zero" . Once you take all of the mixes of a CD and adjust each of them for the same peak level, some mixes will sound weaker than other mixes to the ear. Mastering is the process of taking these final mixes and accomplishing three things:

1

Getting your final recorded product to have sufficient (and competitive) apparent volume:

2.

On a multiple tune release, having the cuts flow one to another without some cuts sounding strong and others weak.

3.

Getting your final recorded product to be tone consistent with competitive product and have tone consistency within the product.
