Many mixes will sound good if you play them back at any level you want. But the
mixes wind up in a medium that has level restrictions. The maximum peak level on
a compact disk is "digital zero" . Once you take all of the mixes of a CD and
adjust each of them for the same peak level, some mixes will sound weaker than
other mixes to the ear. Mastering is the process of taking these final mixes and
accomplishing three things:

product to have sufficient (and competitive) apparent volume: |

having the cuts flow one to another without some cuts sounding strong and others weak. |

product to be tone consistent with competitive product and have tone consistency within
the product. |
