020 -  An Introduction To Disc Mastering
Mastering is the job of optimizing the sound file for delivery through a particular medium. The vinyl record, still popular in certain circles his it's own special limitations that need to be provided for in disc mastering.
 
 

What Is A Multiband Compressor?

The multiband compressor is all the rage in mastering these days, causing main software manufacturers to include this function in their mastering packages. Be it Waves, SoundForge, WaveLab, or Izotope's Ozone Suite, you'll find this this powerful, but tricky tool available to you.

In effect, the multiband compressor splits the audio into separate signals, similar to a crossover network in a speaker system, and then provides separate compression for each of these split signals. Each "band" only contains energy in a particular frequency band. Finally it will recombine the separate signals/bands back into one signal. If you had three bands in your unit, the equivalent patching of hardware to achieve this is shown in figure 1.
