The mastering engineer often encounters situations where the mix received has parts covered up by other parts or frequencies that can't be reproduced well in the intended application. Octave Replacement Equalization comes to the rescue.
 

What is Octave Replacement EQ?

Equalization which reduces energy in one octave while increasing energy in the adjoining octave to compensate. 

What Can It Be Used For?

1.  Making the notes more even in a bass line.
2.  Adjusting the balance of instruments in a mix.
3.  Retaining mix quality in low-fi playback (e.g., ringtones)
