- : Setting & Mis-setting Dynamic Processing – Part 1
With properly settings of parameters, dynamic processing is a
powerful tool. Mis-setting parameters can latterly destroy the sound
quality. In this two-part series, Bob, explains the proper setting of
parameters.
Some of the most misunderstood
parameters for compression and limiting are the attack and release parameters.
To completely understand these parameters, I'm going to first go back to the
analog units that established the compressed sound used in recording even today.
Analog History
The "standard" Detroit area
recording studio of the seventies always had at least a couple of UERI 1176's
and a couple of UERI LA4. Although other compressors and limiters were
used from time to time, you could accomplish most of the dynamic processing
needed to cut analog multitrack.
