Zone Tools Mastering Setup The term mastering means the
activity of making a master recording that can be used to
manufacture (by replication or duplication) high-quality sales
copies in a certain media or can be used for transmission over a
certain media. The ''quality" of the master has to do with the sound
quality of the sales copy.
The most common type of mastering is to make
a "master" for CD replication. If you are unfamiliar with mastering
I suggest you read the Developing Artist Productions article
entitled, "A
Mastering Primer." This article is geared for this common
activity.
There are a variety of programs that allow one to master the
final mix for CD replication. There are dedicated editing and
mastering programs such as Steinberg's "Wavelab" and Sony's "Sound
Forge." There are also programs that are designed to be used
primarily as plug-in programs in DAW setups like Pro Tools, Cubase
or other brands.
This article will show the basic setup of the most common DAW
program (Pro Tools) using Digirack plug-ins that come with the Pro
Tools factory bundles plus Izotope's Ozone 3 mastering "suite" of
plug-ins. Proper setup of the program with the plug-ins allows for
easy mastering. If you use a system like this, I suggest saving a
blank session with everything setup and routed that can be used as a
template.
