Section 1 - Music Industry
Overview/Trademark/Copyright
 |
|
Most people are drawn to the
music industry more on myth than facts. Many
believe, as music videos are so inclined to portray, that the music
business is nothing but glamorous living, fast times, and easy money.
The truth is that this is a BUSINESS, one whose reach extends to all
facets of the mass media--TV, Film, cable, Video Games, and the
Internet. At no other time in its history has music made such a
far-reaching impact. In this section, the student will learn about the
vast scope of this business, how to legally set-up as a business entity
in it--e. sole proprietorship, partnership, or
corporation--copyright fundamentals, trademark and
servicemark procedures, and how to ultimately
prepare for surviving in this business |
Section 2 - Professional
Songwriting and Publishing
 |
|
Songwriting is the most
lucrative end of the Music Industry. It is also the entrance point to the
industry for nothing can begin without the song. New songs are constantly
needed to continue the growth--and prosperity--of the industry and all those
involved in it. In this section, students will learn about this vital part of
the industry and how publishing plays such an important role in maximizing
profits for all concerned. |
Section 3 - Artist/Producer
Contracts & Music Licensing
 |
|
Record labels want as part of
their roster of talent artists and producers who have the potential to be
profitable. With the recent consolidation of so many labels, profitability is
the number one factor in whether or not a producer or artist will be signed.
Very few labels are willing to invest money into a project without some
reasonable assurance of success. Thus the need to sign only a sure-thing is
rampant. In this section, students will learn about the various provisions
which make up an artist’s contract, the role a
producer plays in a recording project, how music is
subsequently licensed, and about contractual items which affect the entire
recording process. |
Section 4 - Agents, Managers,
and Lawyers
 |
|
To succeed in the music
industry requires not only requires skill, persistence and perseverance, but
the machinations of many behind-the-scenes professionals who guide and
structure the careers of the artist. These individuals hold the key to
longevity in the business for their clients if their work is done properly, or
total ruin and failure if is not. In this section, students will learn about
the three major business positions --
agents, managers, and lawyers --
and how they impact nearly every facet of the Music industry. |
Section 5 - Examination |
Comprehensive Exam--The exam will consist of 50 questions, thirty-five of
which have been culled from previous exams. |
