Lesson 18: Upload files to your AOL space

Lesson 19: Create a basic home page

Lesson 20: Enhance your home page, and link the uploaded file

Lesson 20: Using Easy Designer to Improve your Home Page:

Looking for a way to make your 1-2-3 Publish page look better?  Easy Designer will allow you to choose from a selection of available styles for your page or create a custom style of your own.  This program also allows you to import files you have uploaded to your FTP space by creating links to those files.  In this lesson, you will lay out the text frames, format text, add a link to the file uploaded in lesson 18, and make any corrections, if necessary.

Note: AOL makes it quite impossible to add sound to your page through Easy Designer.  When you try to save the page (using Easy Designer), it doesn't retain the scripting changes.  I wouldn't doubt this is some way of avoiding liability in cases of malicious scripting.  The only successful way we have found so far, was to do the following:

download the page to your hard drive
add the html scripting (in either Front Page, Notepad, etc.)
upload the changed page to your FTP space.

However, once you have used another program to change the html scripting, you won't be able to access the page through Easy Designer to make changes any more.  If you try, you'll get an error message, saying the page was created with another program.  If you don't have a web building program or knowledge of scripting, I wouldn't advise adding sound unless you are not planning to make any future changes to the page.

1. Go to hometown.

2. Click on the Edit link in the upper left corner of your screen.

3. Select the page you wish to edit, and click the link for Easy Designer.

4. Click on the link that says Open an Existing Page.

5. Click the Click to get started ! button when it appears, to begin editing.

There is a memory match game you can play while you're waiting.

6. Once again, make sure your page is selected, and click Open.

7. To prevent an overlapping situation, scroll down to the AOL Instant Messenger section, and click on it.  Using either your mouse or the key on your keyboard, move the box down about 6 inches.
8. Scroll back up and grab the next box, and position it just above the box below.
9. Continue dragging each section down until you have reached the top of the page.  Many times, when a page loads, it loses some of its formatting.

Note: It is always best to position the tables from the bottom up, because tables have a tendency to expand downward, covering everything below

10. To edit or format text, double click the box.

Note:  You must highlight the text you want altered.

11. To change background and link colors, right click on the page, away from the boxes and select Page Style.

12. Select an appealing style from the list and click Ok (or create one from the Customize button)

Note:  For this lesson, I will choose the Atlantic Ocean style.  On a deep blue background, the text will be white, the links will be a light orange and the visited links will be a darker orange.
