Lesson 16: Viewing Files and Extensions

In order to see if you have a need this lesson, open your Windows Explorer Program, click on the VIEW menu option and select Details.

Looking to the right hand side of the screen, read the names of the files that are showing.  Do the files have names that contain a dot followed by letters?  These are called file extensions (included are .jpg .bmp .wav .txt, but there are many others), and their purpose is to tell you what kind of file it is.  Word documents are frequently .doc or .html while Works commonly assigns word processing documents a .wps extension.
