Lesson 12: Creating a New Screen Name

Creating an alternate e-mail address is very important before registering on other sites.  Each time a registration form is filled out, the information is not only submitted to the site, it is also submitted to mailing lists, and sent to each company that site is contracted with.  The result can be a devastating mountain of spam.  at www.excite.com, you are given the option of a spam filter, which comes in very handy.

1. On the Settings drop down menu, select Screen Names.

2. If you see an available number in your list of screen names, click on CREATE a Screen Name.

3. Select Yes, if the screen name is for a child.  Otherwise, click No

4.  Read the overview, and click the Create Screen Name button.

5. Give yourself a screen name you will remember easily and click Continue.

6. Enter and reenter a password, which will be easy to remember and click Continue.

7. Select the grouping that comes closest to the age group of the member will be given this screen name.

8.  Normally, you would click Accept Settings, to save your settings.  For this lesson, click Customize Settings, so we can change some of your options.

9.  If your next selection screen could be fully expanded, it would resemble this.

These are the default settings for a General Access (18+) screen name.
