| There are a variety of reasons for using search engines, ranging from genealogic research to locating fan clubs. Search engines are the sites that allow you to search the web for other sites, that fit your topic of interest(s). In this lesson, we will be exploring the best ways to empower yourself with this valuable web tool. |

| 1. Click on the link for www.ixquick.com, and bookmark the site. |
| 2. For this lesson, select web, and type in +ancient +civilizations. (The plus indicates the words you want the site to contain) and click on Search. |

Note: The very first result listed is for a sponsored site. We are not looking for videos, so we are going to narrow our search a little. |
| 3. Go back to the box for the search criteria, and add -video. (The minus indicates the words you do not want the site to contain) and click on Search. In this case, the end result was exactly what we were looking for. |

| 4. Keeping the criteria words unchanged, select news, and click Search. The result displayed shows several news articles related to ancient civilizations. |

| 5. In the search criteria box, change your words to read "ancient civilizations" and click on search. Quotation marks indicate a phrase. Instead of searching for sites with the words ancient and civilizations, it searches for sites with the phrase (ancient civilizations) in its contents. |
